1. Текст, содержащий указатели на другие документы. Способ представления информации с помощью связей между документами.
2. Технология, обеспечивающая поиск заданных тем в текстовых массивах. Поиск обеспечивается включением в тексты указателей, называемых ссылками (links), - это слова или фразы в документе, которые, будучи выбраны, вызывают переход в другой документ и вывод его на экран.
3. Технология хранения и обработки текстовых документов на естественном языке, которая позволяет устанавливать и поддерживать предопределенные связи между документами и/или отдельными их фрагментами, обеспечивая для пользователя возможности навигации в такой структуре для перехода от одного ее компонента к другому. Поскольку такого рода организация информации избавляет пользователя от необходимости только последовательного просмотра документов, гипертекст называют также нелинейным текстом. Гипертекстовые технологии находят широкое применение для построения различных электронных учебников, энциклопедий и т. д. Особенно широкое распространение гипертекст получил в связи с развитием Интернета как базовая технология представления информационных ресурсов Веба. Дальнейшим развитием концепции гипертекста стала технология гипермедиа. Термин "гипертекст" был введен в 1965 г. Т. Нельсоном [Энциклопедия Когаловского].
